He came to Georgia soon after the Revolutionary War and married here,
then Nathan Sweat as a Revolutionary soldier, drew Lot of Land No. 397
in the 20th District of original Muscogee County in the 1827 Land
Lottery, residing at the time in Emanuel County.
A deed appears of record in Bulloch County from Nathan Sweat and his
wife Sarah, to Benjamin Hodges, dated November 14, 1799, for 350 acres
granted Sweat January 1, 1798 (Deed Book "A", pp. 40-41).
He was not born in Beaufort District, S.C., as stated, but rather in
Marion District, S.C., moving to Beaufort District between the close
of the Revolution and the 1790 Census.
In Bishop Gregg's excellent book "History of the Old Cheraws"
(published in 1867) dealing with the early history of old Cheraw
District portion of South Carolina, he says on page 101:
"In the neighborhood of Hunt's Bluff on the east side of the (Peedee)
River were the Sweats, a worthy family and devoted Whigs. William
Sweat, the father, was an old man when the Revolution began. His
sons, James and Nathan, were young men at that time. This was probably
a branch of the family which came with Gideon Gibson from Virginia".
On page 311, in writing about frequent skirmishes with the Tories
during the Revolution, the Bishop wrote: "They (Mrs. Ayer and her
sons, both lads) made a timely escape however, to the swamp which was
nearby, and there remained in concealment for several weeks, being
supplied with food by their good neighbor, James Sweat "; and in a
footnote on same page, said "Mr. (James) Sweat was then quite a young
man. He afterwards became a Baptist preacher and removed to the
outhwestern part of this state, where some of his descendants are
still living.
Nathan an olderbrother of James Sweat, was a brave and active Whig.
Their father, who was then an old man and infirm, lived quietly and
was undisturbed by any one."
On page 312, Bishop Gregg further wrote: "Nathan Sweat was captured by
McArthur's party (of Tories) and carried to their quarters on the west
side of the river above. He remained long enough with them to
discover their fleetest horse; and, watching a favorable opportunity,
mounted the animal and bade his captors adieu. He was pursued but
succeeded in reaching the swamp below, and made his escape. On the
following morning, while sitting on his horse at his

Mr. Sweat was evidently of strong character and a leader in the community. He participated in the famous Rawhide Fight in Vernon Parish, La. about 1851and led a posse of vigilanties in cleaning up the "Jayhawkers" who plagued the area during the War between the States with their robberies and murders. Children of Leonard "Uncle Linn" and Elizabeth Sweat who moved to Texas following the Rawhide Fight.
It has been said he and son Gadi were killed in a fued with the NASH & KEEFER families.

This is the correct information, I hope. :-)
Gilbert died on 25 May 1830 according to the petition to the St. Landry Parish Probate Court of his brother,
Ephraim, who stated that he was the only heir of Gilbert who died leaving a considerable amount of property which consisted of lands, slaves, horses and cattle [Wise, Sweat Families of the South, 15-17].
Also, Opelousas Parish later became St Landry Parish.

Two brothers, Gideon/Gadi and Ephriam Sweat came to LA from the Carolina's in the early 1800's to 1810. Gideon married Francis Smith and had a plantation near Turkey Creek, LA. There were no children born of this union. Ephriam married Olive Perkins and are the ancestors of most Sweats in West Central LA and East Texas. I descend from their son Gadi who married Letty Johnson. They also had a son Ephriam. These Sweats and other related families were, as family tradition says, following the Rev. Joseph Willis, the first Baptist Minister west of the Mississippi. There is a book entitled "Sweat Families of the South" written by General Erbon Wise that has most of this genealogy in it. I don't have this information in front of me but I do know that around 1851 there was a large migration of Sweats, Perkins, Nash, Willis', etc to East Texas. This was after the "Raw Hyde and Bloody Fight" that took place at Walnut Hill, LA in which several people were killed. My ancestor Leonard Covington Sweat, his wife Elizabeth Burgess, most of their children and their respective families left LA at that time. If I can help find something for you please let me know.
