A skirmish near Natchez, Mississippi, on Saint Catherine's Creek (unnamed stream W and S of Natchez, flowing into the Mississippi River near St. Catherine's Bend).

There were several people named Micajer Bunch. The Micager I follow in this research is also listed on several records with the nickname “Cage” He is associated with my seventh generation grandfather William “The Tory” Riddle. I don’t know if this association was from their neighborhood 1750’s in the community of the Flat River, Orange County, NC, or a possible relationship by blood, or marriage.

The first record I have found on Micager was this 1749 tax list of Lunenburg County, Virginia (from Sunlight on the Southside) William Howard’s list; Gedion Bunch and tithe Cage Bunch. Note; Obviously, Cage is the son of Gedion Bunch. I am convinced this is the same Micajer “Caiger” Bunch who has such a close association with the Riddles, Collins and Gibsons. Who later moved 1790’s into Hawkins County, Tennessee.

Gedion Bunch moves into Granville County, NC (Orange County formed from Granville County in 1753) Granville Tax List 1750.*A tithe is a male 16, or over) William Bolling 1 tithe; James Bowling 1 tithe; *Gideon Bunch 2 tithes.; Thomas Collins Sr. 1 tithe; Samuel Collins 1 tithe; John Collins 1 tithe; Thomas Gibson with tithes Charles Gibson and George Gibson.

Gedion Bunch born about 1715 was son of John Bunch born about 1695 because he sold the land his father John Bunch inherited. John was the son of Paul Bunch who was born about 1670. Paul Bunch received a land patent for 265 acres on the south side of the Roanoke River adjoining Gideon Gibson on Jan 1, 1725. His Will was probated March 10, 1727 in Chowan County, NC leaving his land and 8 slaves to son John Bunch, and to Fortune Holdbee and her daughters Keziah and Jemima. Elizabeth Bunch and another daughter Russell received one shilling each.

John Bunch SR born ca 1630 came to Lancaster County, Virginia in 1651 as an indentured servant. He later moved to New Kent County, Virginia and owned land on the Pamunkey River by 1670’s John Bunch Sr had at least two sons:
John Bunch Jr. (had large family in Louisa County, Virginia.
Paul Bunch listed above (died 1726 in Chowan County, NC
There is a legend among descendants of the above named Bunches that they are related to Pocahontas, the Pohattan Indian princes who married John Rolf (Park Bunch families by Alice Crandall Park and Mrs. Garland King, Tennessee State library.)

Micajer Bunch son of Gedion is listed in 1754 Orange County, NC tax list of Gedion Macon in the household of John Stoud who paid a tax for Micager Bunch and Lydia Bunch possibly his daughter and son in-law?

The 1755 Orange County, North Carolina, tax list several families who either they are their forefather once lived on the Pamunkey River in Louisa County, Virginia and who eventually migrated to Hawkins County, TN and became know as the Melungeons.

Most of these families moved from the flat River to the New River area of Virginia and North Carolina. The follow tax lists are from Kegley’s early adventures on the Western Waters) 1771 New River area Botetourt County, Virginia
Charles Collins 1 tithe
John Collins 4 tithes
Samuel Collins two tithes
Charles Sexton 1 tithe
McKegar Bunch 1 tithe
William Sexton 1 tithe

Some of these including Micager Bunch were living on Indian Lands.
Fincastle County was formed from Botetourt in 1772; this 1773 tax list shows the ones living on Indian land. Which means they had crossed the survey line agreed upon in the treaty of Lochaber as the western boundary.

Micajer Bunch was in the battle at Point Plesant against the Shawnee Indians (1774 Lord Dunsmore War, Montgomery County Soldiers by Kegley)
William Riddle this authors seventh generation grandfather also fought in this war and their commanding officer Captain William Herbert plaintiff, Cajer Bunch and Wm Ridley defendants. 2- William Scott and Micajer Bunch, debt (Fincastle County, Virginia Court Record)

Wilkes County NC land records Micajer Bunch land on Elk Creek and it was at the mouth of Elk Creek where Capt William Riddle camped when he took Col. Benjamin Cleveland hostage. Was taking him to the British Command post in SC for ransom money from the British to. William Riddle camp was near the mouth of Elk Creek on Riddle Knob and a knob nearby was called Bunches Knob. William Riddle was hung in the spring of 1781 at Wilkesboro NC. His Widow and children migrated to Hawkins County and some of his children eventually migrated from Hawkins County, Tennessee, Lee County, Virginia. Then to Cumberland County, KY. And it’s possible they left the New River area at the same time.

The exact date of Micajer Bunch land purchase is not found, but on a grant March 3, 1792, to John Rice 140 acres on the waters of Joseph Wallings Mill Creek a branch of the Clinch River and beginning at a popular and Dogwood being a corner of Micajer Bunch claim then running along Bunch line. This land was located near Present day Kyles Ford, Hancock County, TN and very new the border of Virginia. This land location explains why Cager (Micajer) Bunch signed the 1792 petition to form Lee County, Virginia. At this time Virginia claimed most of the land on the North side Of Clinch River. Lee County, Virginia tax list. 17th March 1795.
Drury Bunch (1 horse)
Micajah Bunch (1 horse)
Torel Bunch (1 horse)
Clem Bunch (no horses)

The 1796 tax list of Lee County, VA also included the same list but adds Isyreal Bunch,

1797 Lee County, VA tax list Micajer Bunch, Isreal Bunch, Solomon Bunch, Claiborn Bunch, Jesee Bowlin, Zachariah Goins, he was son of John and Elizabeth Goins, of Henry County, Virginia

Micajer Cage Bunch is listed by Some historians as one of the first Melungeons in this Newman Ridge, Blackwater area. Micajer along with several other families migrated to Cumberland County, Kentucky in about 1798.
1799- (Cumberland County, KY tax list courtesy Mary Hill, Family History Center, Salt Lake City, Utah.) Jessee Robert, Cage Bunch, Elisha Blevins, Joseph Bunch, Drury Bunch, James Roberts? Stephen Robinson, Moses Roberts, George Rogers, John Rogers all of these believed from the Newman Ridge, Blackwater area of Lee County, Virginia and Hawkins County, Tennessee. Micajer Bunch is missing from the 1804 Cumberland County, Kentucky tax list. He probably died between the 1793 and 1804 tax collections.
What is weird is that on the 1805 Tax list of Cumberland County, Kentucky most of these on the 1799 list are gone. James and Joseph Riddle sons of Captain William and happy Rogers Riddle also settled in Cumberland County, Kentucky around 1804-5.

6. HARRISON—Isaac Harrison married Mary Gibson, daughter of Glbeon
Gibson and sister of Rev Randal Gibson, of Washington, Miss. His son
Nathaniel Harrison, was born October 13, I776, on the Pee Dee river
South Carolina. He went to Mississippi in 1798, and in 1784 he
married Letitia Gibson, daughter of Reuben Gibson, who went to
Mississippi
with his father, Gibean Gibson, in 1765. I have heard that these
Gibsons and Harrisons went from Va. to S. C. and that there were old
brick walls still standing that were built of brick brought from
England by the Gibsons and Harrisons. Were these the Harrisons of
Brandon and of Wakefleld? Information concerning the Harrisons and
Gibsons that Intermarried is greatly
desired. G

167. GIBSON—In reply will say that I do not know the names of. any cf
Gideon Gibsons sons except Stephen and Roger. In Gregg's ''History of
the Old Cheraws"' he says he had three sons. ,' Again, In giving an
account of a disturbance in the province,. in which the, people were
arrayed against the constituted authorities he says; "Gibson
[Gideon] had one of his sons killed, and another wounded in the
neck." This occurred in August 1768. In 1781 when Colonel Maurice
Murphy was doing valiant service in the Cheraw district under
General Green he was guilty of what hs Uncle Gideon Gibson
considered a cruel retaliation upon a Tory prisoner and blamed him
for it. Says Gregg: "Subsequently Murphy stopped with his company
at Gibson's for breakfast, and while there the subject was
resumed. A quarrel ensued , and as Murphy mountd hs horse to start
off, Gibson followed him to the door and said something offensive
whereupon Murphy shot him dead. Three of Gibson's sons were present
in Murphy's company and were men of undoubted courage; but knowing
his violent temper and desperate resolution, did not interfere. :"
Gregg makes frequent mention of Jordan Gibson up to 1783,
Gibson, 'His brother Jordan," said Gregg, 'went to the west as a
companion of Daniel Boone."

I know positibely that Gideon Gibson's son Stephen removed from South
Carolina to Georgia in 1810 and became a very wealthy planter. His
only child, Martha Gibson, married Major James Fort. One of Mrs.
Martha Gibson's grandson is Henry C. King, 424 Augusta Street, San
Antonio, Tex., to whom I would refer you for information concerning
the descendants of Gideon Gibson. He says; "The brothers of hs
great grandfather went to Mississippi and founded the town of Port
Gibson, but their names none of the family seem to know." In a
letter from Isaac F. Harrison of Fort Worth, Tex., who maried a
granddaughter of David Gibson, he says; "Port Gibson was named for
Samuel and James Gibson who settled the place." Samuel Gibson gave
the ground on which the court house in POrt Gibson was built. He
died in Kentucky as he was on his way to Virginia to recover for the
heirs a handsome property of one of the Gibson who had died. He was
sent by the Mississippi heirs. He was probably another son of Gideon
Gibson. In a letter from Nathaniel C. Gibson, of Vicksburg, son of
Stephen Gibson, so of Gordon [Jordan?] and Mary Middleton, to John
Gibson his uncle of Darlington, S.C., he says; "Roger Gibson was in
this state some few years ago, but I did not see him and he left for
Tennessee. He had two married daughters in this county----Mrs.
Fretwell, of this place [Vicksburg], and Mrs. Kean of Rodney." I
know nothing more of Roger Gibson and his descendants. He probably
settled in Kentucky or Tennessee.and his descendants will probably be
found in one or both of these states. Your are doubtless correct in
your believe that your are descended from Gideon Gibson, of Hickory
Grove, S.C. ad it seems most probable that it is through his son
Roger Gibson.

Research Notes: Gideon/Gibeon "Gip" "Gib" Gibson received 165 acres on St. Catherines Creek from Spain, March 10, 1789. Later he sold it to Joseph Harrison, his reported son-in-law.
The first record of a GIBEON GIBSON in Mississippi is his petition to the Natchez Court 16 Oct 1781 seeking payment for his work from his deceased employers' estate. He bought 630 acres on St. Catherine's Creek from John Ferguson on 17 Jan 1783. In 1792, he set out to dist his prp to his sons living in the Natchez District. Ruben, Randal, David.
The original book of proof which supposedly lists all of Gideon Gibson's and Mary O'Connel's children is the PARISH REGISTRY BOOK of PRINCE FREDERIC WINYAW PARISH (EPISCOPAL) in S. C.. These are some of the contents. We do not know the current location of the book but assume it is in a safe place within the S. C. Archives:

1. WILLIAM GIBSON, son of GIDEON and MARY his wife was born 15 Sept 1743, baptized 9 Oct 1743.
2. HANNAH SAUNDERS, dau of GEORGE SAUNDERS & HANNAH his wife was born 19 Jan 1743, baptized 8 Oct 1743.
3. SARAH GIBSON, dau of GIDEON GIBSON & MARTHA his wife, born 19 Jan 1744/5? Baptized 23 Oct 1745.
4. REUBEN GIBSON, son of GIDEON GIBSON & MARTHA, his wife, born 29 Nov 1751, baptized 29 ? 1753.
5. GIDEON GIBSON, son of GIDEON GIBSON & MARTHA his wife, born 12 March 1750, baptized 2 June 1753.
6. MARY GIBSON, dau of GIDEON GIBSON & MARTHA his wife, born 2 Oct 1752, baptized 2 June 1753.
7. ANN SAUNDERS, dau of GEORGE SAUNDERS and HANNAH his wife born Nov 3, 1736, baptized 25 Dec 1737.
NATHANIEL SAUNDERS, son of GEORGE SAUNDERS & HANNAH his wife, born 15 March 1740, baptized Feb 1741
There were many other names. The numbering system means nothing, except that was the order that I read them off a sheet of paper.
Brodie says that "Gideon Gibson participated in the Regulator uprising in SC in 1768. He did not serve in the Revolution, but several sons did.
One report states that Gideon (Gibeon) Gibson was born in England. I have the reference given bye grandaughter of Gip, states he was b. in England.

Natchez. A well-known tribe that formerly lived on and about St Catherine's Creek, east and south of the present city of Natchez, Miss. The name, belongings to a single town, was extended to the tribe and entire group of towns, which included also peoples of alien blood who had been conquered by the Natchez or had taken refuge with them. Iberville, on his ascent of the Mississippi in 1699, names, in the Choctaw language, the following 8 towns, exclusive of Natchez proper: Achougoulas, Cogoucoula, Ousagoncoula, Pochougoula, Thoucoue, Tougoulas, Yatanocas, and Ymacachas. Of these, Tougoulas and perhaps Thoucoue are the Tioux towns. It is probably safe to infer that the 9 towns, including Natchez, represented the entire group, and that the Corn, Gray, Jenezenaque, White Apple, and White Earth villages are only other names for some of the above, with which it is now impossible to identify them. The Tioux and Grigras were two nations under the protection of the Natchez; both were of alien blood. Du Pratz alludes to a tradition that the Taensa and Chitimacha were formerly united with the Natchez, but left them, though the latter had always recognized them as brothers. The Taeusa were, indeed, probably an offshoot of the Natchez, but the Chitimacha were of a distinct linguistic family. It is difficult to form an estimate of the numerical strength of this tribe, as the figures given vary widely. It is probable that in 1682, when first visited by the French, they numbered about 6,000, and were able to put from 1,000 to 1,200 warriors in the field. The Natchez engaged in three wars with the French, in 1716, 1722, and 1729. The last, which proved fatal to their nation, was caused by the attempt of the French governor, Chopart, to occupy the site of their principal village as a plantation, and it opened with a general massacre of the French at Fort Rosalie, established in 1716. The French, in retaliation, attacked the Natchez villages with a strong force of Choctaw allies, and in 1730 the Natchez abandoned their villages, into three bodies. A small section remained not far from their former home, and a second body fled to Sicily island, near Washita river, where they were attacked early in 1731 by the French, many of there killed, and about 450 captured and sold into slavery in Santo Domingo. The third and most numerous division was received by the Chickasaw and built a village near them in north Mississippi, called by Adair, Nanne Hamgeh; in 1735 these refugees numbered 180 warriors, or a total of about 700. In the year last named a body of Natchez refugees settled in South Carolina by permission of the colonial government, but some years later moved up to the Cherokee country, where they still kept their distinct town and language up to about the year 1800. The principal body of refugees, however, had settled on Tallahassee creek, an affluent of Coosa river. Hawkins in 1799 estimated their gun-men at about 50. They occupied the whole of one town called Natchez and part of Abikudshi. The Natchez were therefore not exterminated by the French, as has frequently been stated, but after suffering severe losses the remainder scattered far and wide among alien tribes. A few survivors, who speak their own language, still exist in Indian Territory, living with the Cherokee, and in the councils of the Creeks until recently had one representative. Though the accounts of the Natchez that have come down to us appear to be highly colored, it is evident that this tribe, and doubtless others on the lower Mississippi, occupied a somewhat anomalous position among the Indians. They seem to have been a strictly sedentary people, depending for their livelihood chiefly upon agriculture. They had developed considerable skill in the arts, and wove a textile fabric from the inner bark of the mulberry which they employed for clothing. They made excellent pottery and raised mounds of earth upon which to erect their dwellings and temples. They were also one of the eastern tribes that practiced head flattening. In the main the Natchez appear to have been peaceable, though like other tribes, they were involved in frequent quarrels with their neighbors. All accounts agree in attributing to them an extreme forma of sun worship and a highly developed ritual. Moreover, the position and function of chief among them differed markedly from that among other tribes, as their head chief seems to have had absolute power over the property and lives of his subjects. On his death his wives were expected to surrender their lives, and parents offered their children as sacrifices. The nation was divided into two exogamic classes, nobility and commoners or michmichgupi, the former being again divided into suns, nobles proper, and esteemed men. Children of women of these three had the rank of their mother, but children of common women fell one grade below that of their father. There were various ways, however, by which a man could raise himself from one grade to another at least as far as the middle grade of nobles. While the commoners consisted partially of subject tribes, the great majority appear to have been as pure Natchez as the nobility. In spite of great lexical divergence, there is little doubt that the Natchez language is a Muskhogean dialect. Grigras. A French nickname and the only known name of a small tribe all ready incorporated with the Natchez confederacy in 1720; it was applied because of the frequent occurrences of grigra in their language and ethnic relations, but unless affiliated with the Tonica, the tribe was evidently distinct from every other, since, as indicated by the sound grigra, their language possessed an r.

Excerpt from W.W. Sellers' "History of Marion County"

GIBSON
Among the early settlers at "Sandy Bluff" were the Gibsons. Gregg. p.73, says: "Of the Gibsons, Gideon and Jordon were brothers. The latter (Jordon) went to the West as a companion of Daniel Boone. Gideon Gibson came with his father from Virginia to Pee Dee. There is a public record of a grant to him for 550 acres of land as early as April, 1736. He settled at a place called Hickory Grove, five miles from Sandy bluff, on a large and fertile body of land, long after noted as the most valuable in that region.
Another quite respectable family of Gibsons are below Marion Court house. The first known of them was Squire David Gibson, who was a very worthy man and good citizen. Think he came from Scotland - at any rate, he was a Scotchman; his tongue betrayed his nationality. The writer does not know whom he married But he raised four sons, if no more, James, Allen, Jessee and Albert.

Research Notes: It is known among the Goines family, as told my Mary Melissa (Dawson)Goines, herself, that Oscar's natural father was a Doctor Hollis.(Origin of his father yet unknown as of Nov 1997) He adopted the Goinesname for himself, though there is no record of official adoption byWilliam Lawrence Goines.
His older sister, Florence Goins, born in 1898 was indeed a Goins. In a1900 Census Record, I discovered Mary Melissa living with her father,Thomas Dawson and sister Henrietta Dawson. Oscar was born after thecensus was taken, so he is not recorded. The census records her as aWidow with one child, Florence Goins. So apparently, Mary Melissa wasmarried to another Goins, widowed, then conceived Oscar, and latermarried William Lawrence Goines, with whom she had other children.
Born a Hollis; Father was a Doctor; Oscar adopted Goines name.

General Notes: mishiho@aol.com <mailto:mishiho@aol.com> wrote:
"Thomas D. Goin" and several members of the Nash family were members of the militia of Atascosita mustered into service January 16, 1827 under the command of Capt. Hugh B. Johnston. They marched with the militia of the Austin Colony to put down the Fredonian Revolution at Nacogdo-ches. As the militia approached Nacogdoches on January 31, the rebels fled across the Sabine River, ending the insurrec-tion, according to 'Liberty, Liberty County and Atascosita District' by Miriam Partlow."
This service on behalf of Mexico proved to be very helpful to the Atascosita colonists in obtaining approval of their land grant applications. In addition to Thomas D. Gowen, Jr, the expedition of the 30-man militia included Aaron Drake, John Drake and James Drake.
In November 1827 the settlers in Atascosito filed a petition with Don Anastacio Bustamente, Commander General of the Internal Eastern States, regarding their land applications.
Seventy-three signatures were affixed to the petition from "the inhabitants who are settled on the Trinity and San Jacinto Rivers" Included were "Tomas D. Gewen, Aaron Drak, John Drak, Hugh H. Johnston and Tomas Nash." Most of the applicants received their land grants during the years 1831-1835. Thomas D. Gowen and the Drakes did not receive land grants which may have influenced their decision to return to Louisi-ana.

Research Notes: >After Francis Smith Taylor Sweat died, Delaney Taylor Bass filed suit in St Landry, Parish, for her mother's
portion of Gilbert Sweat's estate. It was contested against Gady Sweat, brother to Gilbert, who claimed he
was the heir to his brothers estate since Gilbert died without issue. Delaney was the plaintiff and Gady was the
defendant in the suit.<
This is the correct information, I hope. :-)
Gilbert died on 25 May 1830 according to the petition to the St. Landry Parish Probate Court of his brother,
Ephraim, who stated that he was the only heir of Gilbert who died leaving a considerable amount of property which consisted of lands, slaves, horses and cattle [Wise, Sweat Families of the South, 15-17].
Also, Opelousas Parish later became St Landry Parish.
Sorry for the mix-up.
Two brothers, Gideon/Gadi and Ephriam Sweat came to LA from the Carolina's in the early 1800's to 1810. Gideon married Francis Smith and had a plantation near Turkey Creek, LA. There were no children born of this union. Ephriam married Olive Perkins and are the ancestors of most Sweats in West Central LA and East Texas. I descend from their son Gadi who married Letty Johnson. They also had a son Ephriam. These Sweats and other related families were, as family tradition says, following the Rev. Joseph Willis, the first Baptist Minister west of the Mississippi. There is a book entitled "Sweat Families of the South" written by General Erbon Wise that has most of this genealogy in it. I don't have this information in front of me but I do know that around 1851 there was a large migration of Sweats, Perkins, Nash, Willis', etc to East Texas. This was after the "Raw Hyde and Bloody Fight" that took place at Walnut Hill, LA in which several people were killed. My ancestor Leonard Covington Sweat, his wife Elizabeth Burgess, most of their children and their respective families left LA at that time. If I can help find something for you please let me know.
